Customer Rating: Summary: Back to basics Comment: I worked for 30 years as an architectural photographer and avoided most studio work instead shooting on location with natural lighting to document my clients projects. What set me apart from some of my peers was the fact that I would use volunteers to populate my assignments to achieve scale and demonstrate function. My focus was on the structure and often I ignored the way lighting interacted with my models.
I just received a copy of this book and found it to be a useful overview of how to create quality lighting without becoming too bogged down with technical details. I wish I had access to this before I retired but I will enjoy this new set of ideas, examples and some upbeat stories to use to capture subjects in my travels. Thanks!
Customer Rating: Summary: Lighting for Photographers Comment: There is no one else that I believe is better suited to write about photography and lighting than Steven Begleiter. Photography is Steven's passion as well as his life long career. '50 Lighting Setups for Portrait Photographers: Easy-to-Follow Lighting Designs and Diagrams' is a well thought out, well written book. Anyone interested in understanding the techniques of lighting would benefit from reading Steven's new and exciting book.
Customer Rating: Summary: Not what I thought Comment: I received this book for Christmas 08, after asking for it. I wrongly assumed that in, "50 Lighting Setup for Portrait Photographers:",the book would review each of the many lighting set-up such as Rembrant, Butterfly, Paramount, Side lighting and so many more giving details about how, where and why to place each light in relation to the model along with lighting specs. However, what the author has done was take fifty of his own real life situations and useing a single page tell about each "Assignment". That is what the pourpose of the photo shoot was. Examples inclued, for a magazine, a publicity photo, for a play, for an annual report, billboard adverting, for a CD cover or for his first book. With many of these "assignments" being done outside of a studio. Next he shares his "Visual Objective" what he was trying to portray in the photograph. Then comes "Posing", this is of intrest, however many of the posing situations are specific to the "assignment" and or his "visual objectives". "The Sory" follows, which is his interaction with the client/ model and how it helped him to decide his plan of action. He follows up with "tips". Last, a small diagram was placed in the bottom corner
Customer Rating: Summary: An easy to understand informative guide to great portraits Comment: Steven Begleiters 50 Lighting Setups for Portrait Photographers is entertaining, informative, and easy to understand. It is a great source for the beginning portrait photographer as well as the seasoned. I have it on my desk to browse while I am waiting for my printer. I pick up pearls of wisdom on every page. I will refer to it for ideas on lighting setups, poses and techniques. Begleiters setups run from simple to complex. One does not need to have a fortune invested in equipment to benefit from his techniques.
50 Lighting Setups is weeks workshop summarized in 50 case studies.
It is a great gift for any photographer wanting to take better portraits of grandchildren or presidents.
Customer Rating: Summary: Clear with great stories "from the trenches" Comment: I am not a professional photographer, but I am a serious amateur and have been looking for a guide to improve the quality of my shots. I just received my copy (early holiday gift) of this book and have found it to be a straightforward "how to" with the added benefit of entertaining stories from Mr. Begleiter's career. I am looking forward to great results!
