Editorial Reviews:

A grand tale of obsession about the brilliant Glenn Gould and the unique, temperamental instrument he came to love beyond all others, by a top New York Times writer.
Glenn Gould was one of the most complex, brilliant artists of the twentieth century, a musician famous for bizarre habits: he wore a hat and gloves even on the warmest summer day; refused to shake hands for fear of germs or damaged fingers; hummed and conducted himself while he played; and traveled the world with a battered old chair, refusing to perform while sitting on anything else.
But perhaps Gould’s greatest obsession of all was with a Steinway concert grand known as CD318. To explain that relationship, which Gould himself described as “a romance on three legs,” Katie Hafner introduces us to the important figures in Gould’s life, including Verne Edquist, his longtime, long-suffering, blind tuner. She offers a fascinating history of the art of tuning, and takes us inside Steinway during the war years, when CD318 was built. And she dissects Gould’s life with the piano, from his first encounter with it to the endless coddling and tweaking that Edquist performed over the years. Hafner includes Gould’s stormy, sometimes outrageous, correspondence with Steinway, and describes his despair when CD318 was fatally dropped from a loading dock.
The book will appeal to fans of books like The Piano Shop on the Left Bank, as well as to those looking fora rich story of obsession like The Orchid Thief.

Summary: A great story, well-told
Comment: This little gem of a book weaves together the lives of Gould, his obsession with CD 318, his nearly blind tuner and the sad story of the decline of the Steinway piano in a narrative of great pathos. Even if you have read everything about Gould you will be captivated by this story. This is one of the best books of the year.

Summary: History in Enjoyable Style
Comment: Katie Hafner's writing creates wonderful images of the pianist Gould and his idiosyncracies. Her treatment of the technical details of piano construction is done in an easy-to-read style and helps explain some of the problems Gould encountered. She traces the history of the Steinway Company and how it modified piano construction, adding to Gould's frustrations. I was so impressed with this work that I ordered more of the author's books.

Summary: I've just interviewed the author for podcast
Comment: If your readers are interested in hearing the author talk about this book, I've just posted my podcast interview with her at http://www.bookbuffet.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/news.article/type/home/article_ID/AE4F5984-9604-4767-B9D39C33A311DA46/index.cfm (highlight link and paste in a browser). This is a wonderful story and it is fascinating to hear how Katie came up with the idea to write a story "told through the prism of an inanimate object" and that was how she came upon CD318. The three-for-one-deal is that the reader also gets to learn (more) about the Canadian musical genius, Glenn Gould and his near-blind piano tuner, Verne Edquist from Saskatchewan. I loved the parts about the Steinway piano family of manufacturers and their marketing and craftsmanship and domination of the performing artists' circuit. Enjoy! Summary: Very pleased with my purchase.
Comment: I listen to Glenn Gould recordings just about everyday and have been for for the past five or six years. Playing, tuning, some regulating of my own piano and recording myself playing Bach on it is a hobby of mine inspired by the great Gould so its almost as if this book was written for me especially. I loved it. I laughed, I cried. And more importantly, I "ah-hahed." So, its true, you CAN blame the piano! This book makes me want to go piano shopping.
