Irene Spencer did as she felt God commanded in becoming the second wife to her brother-in-law Verlan LeBaron. When the government raided their community-the Mormon village of Short Creek, Arizona-seeking to enforce the penalties for practicing polygamy, Irene and her family fled to Verlan's family ranch in Mexico. Here they lived in squalor and desolate conditions with Verlan's six brothers, one sister, and numerous wives and children. This appalling and astonishing tale has captured the attention of readers around the world. Irene's inspirational story reveals how far religion can be stretched and abused and how one woman and her children found their way out, into truth and redemption. (2006)

Customer Rating: Summary: Wonderful Book!! Comment: I just got this book on the 19th of December, and had it finished by the 22nd. I could not stop reading! The book is incredibly interesting and sad all at the same time. It's amazing what some people will do for their religion, love, and family. Reading this book (certain parts of course) made me very appreciative of the things that I have in my life, and just how lucky most of us are. Definitely a great read!!!
Customer Rating: Summary: Shattered Comment: This was a great look insid polygamy and the author is very frank about hear conflicted feeling. I enjoyed this very much.
Customer Rating: Summary: Informative and Captivating Comment: I absolutely loved this book. The author begins by giving the reader some very interesting background information about the fundamental Mormon belief system. By understanding this belief system, the tone is set for the remainder of the book. I feel that the author did an outstanding job of relaying the facts of her life without criticism or a vengeful spirit. She expressed enough emotions to help me relate to her. Again, I absolutely loved this book. Especially the ending!
Customer Rating: Summary: shattered dreams Comment: I didn't care for this book. I found it to be depressing and degrading to women.
